About The Purebreed Lab Rescue

Our Labrador retriever rescue grew out of a love for these dogs and a common goal of avoiding shelter stays or even euthanasia of loving pets.  We strive to rescue, foster, and place any Lab in need of a new home.  People needing to surrender a dog can contact us and we, in turn, try to place the dog in need with a new family, or into a foster home where they are cared for until a permanent home is available.  Please keep in mind we are an all volunteer organization so be patient with follow-ups as most of our volunteers work full time at other jobs.  All of our work is focused in the Michigan area so please be aware that if you live out of state you must be willing to come here to adopt/surrender a dog.

Adopting A Labrador Retriever

Adoption can be both a rewarding and challenging experience. Before adopting a Labrador retriever we recommend you research the breed to educate yourself on is strengths and weaknesses. Did you know that Labs come in three colors? (Black, Chocolate, Yellow) You can get that information from your public library or the American Kennel Club. The best way is to speak with Lab owners and visit with their dogs.

Most of the dogs we receive for adoption come from homes in which the Lab was well cared for but for one reason or another the owner can no longer keep the dog. Many of our Labs come to us with complete medical histories and temperament info from their current owner. You also may get a chance to meet the previous owner and discuss any of your concerns about the dog.

Occasionally we also receive dogs from Humane Societies or Shelters or rescue stray Labs and therefore extensive background information may not be available. Please note that although the Purebreed Lab Rescue makes every effort to provide a Labrador retriever with a compatible temperament, the Purebreed Lab Rescue does not guarantee the temperament or behavior of the Lab and is not responsible in any form for their actions.

You must be a homeowner with a fenced yard to qualify for the adoption process.

Adoption request forms are on this web site. Please fill one out to start the process.

The adoption fee is for a neutered and spade dogs $200.00 and $175.00 for a non-neutered and spade dog. This covers the cost of operating expenses and placing the dogs. Adoption payments are due at the time of adoption before adoption contracts are sent. Labs received from other states may have donation fees greater than $200.00. Those fees will be determined on a case by case basis.

After you have adopted and waited through an adjustment period, if your new dog does not work out we ask that you please contact PLR for help, advice or possible relocation of the dog.

Adoption donation payment is due at the time of adoption before adoption contracts are sent.Donation fees are not refundable. Please contact Kathleen.

Surrendering A Labrador Retriever

Surrendering a lab is free but we ask for donations to help cover the costs and your dog must meet certain criteria to be eligible for adoption.
The criteria are as follows:
  • it must be a pure breed Labrador retriever (papers not necessary)
  • it must not have a history of biting or aggression
  • all bad habits such as chewing or barking must be revealed
Your honesty in the surrender contract is essential! False or misleading information will result in the dog being immediately returned to the owner and the Purebreed Lab Rescue will cease to provide any assistance in placement effective immediately. We also require a complete explanation as to why you are surrendering the dog.

The PLR prefers a system where your dog is kept in your home giving the prospective adopter a chance to speak with you and ask questions about the dog. This also prevents the need for your dog to transfer through three or more different families before landing in a permanent home. That can be very hard on a dog. In instances where a new home is not readily available and immediate placement for your dog is needed, please call for information about foster home placement.

The first step in finding your dog a new home is to fill out a surrender request. The request is now available online. You can fill it out and your request is automatically put in our records, or you can call us and someone will be happy to get the information from you. Your name and phone number will only be given out to people who have been screened by one of our volunteers and are requesting a dog similar to yours.

Fostering For The PLR

Normally we attempt to place dogs "owner to owner". However, we would like to know of people who love Labrador retrievers and would be interested in becoming a foster family for the breed. The foster family would sign a contract with the rescue and recognize that the placement would be temporary and the dog is the sole property of the rescue. The foster family also recognizes that although the Purebreed Lab Rescue has made every effort to provide a Labrador retriever with compatible temperament, the Purebreed Lab Rescue does not warrant the temperament or behavior of the Lab and is not held liable in any form for any acts while living with the fostering family. The fostering family assumes all liability for the dog while the Lab is in foster care.

If funds are available the rescue may reimburse for food and medical expenses incurred by the dog in foster care.
